About the Department
The Department of Computer Science has grown tremendously in the last several years. We have doubled the number of tenure and tenure-track faculty members to 25 and have steeply increased our research footprint. Faculty in the Department of Computer Science conduct numerous research projects with funding from a variety of federal and state funding agencies, including four prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER awards. Research is conducted in areas such as algorithms, bioinformatics, computer and information security, computer architecture, computer networks, databases, high performance computing, parallel and distributed systems, programming languages and compilers, and software engineering among others.
The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and optional concentrations in Software Engineering and in Computer and Information Security. Our newly renovated teaching and research facilities include many state of the art computer labs and classrooms, several high-speed parallel computer clusters, wireless networks and over 200 PCs and workstations. Computer Science alumni are conducting research and enjoying rewarding careers at top companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Dell, Hewlett Packard, AT&T, Rackspace, USAA and Southwest Research Institute.
The University of Texas at San Antonio is the largest of six universities in San Antonio, growing fast with over 28,000 students. Located in South Texas, San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the USA with over a million people and the home to the Alamo, the River Walk, and the four time NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio is 75 miles from Austin, and a morning’s drive from both Houston and the great beaches of the Gulf Coast. For most of the year, it is warm, short-sleeve weather, and we border the scenic Texas Hill Country with its quaint small town restaurants and shops and its opportunities for hiking and river tubing.
