Welcome to new faculty: Dr. Mikhail Gubanov
Mikhail Gubanov is a Cloud Technology Endowed Assistant Professor in UTSA Computer Science Department since fall 2015. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 2010.
His research interests include cloud computing, large-scale data management/analytics, information retrieval, and biomedical informatics.
During his doctoral studies, Gubanov published his seminal work on automatic domain- and source-independent information extraction from text. It had a transformative effect on data management by initiating a substantial body of research in this direction. Later, in collaboration with IBM Research, Gubanov was one of the first to introduce new data structures and algorithms enabling automatic big data integration. Both contributions were published as invited book chapters by Springer.
While working at M.I.T. as a Postdoctoral Associate, Gubanov and Stonebraker (2015 A.M. Turing Award Winner, NAE member) were among the first to describe a system performing data fusion with unstructured text at scale. His collaborative project on medical data analytics, was a recent finalist of both Nokia Global 2.25M XPrize and Vodafone Americas Foundation Annual Wireless Innovation Project.
To date he co-authored more than 20 refereed publications and 2 invited book chapters. He is also a recipient of 2015 NASHP Young Investigator Award.
