Power-Aware Multimedia Study Group
Fall 2005

Organizers: Dr. Ali Saman Tosun  and Dr. Dakai Zhu

What is the group: It is basically an interest oriented study group. We read interesting papers together and discuss them. Please be advised that this is NOT an official class, neither a seminar, which means that you won't get any credit for participating in the group, except you may learn something interesting.

Why Power-Aware Multimedia: With the increased performance of the modern computing systems, their power consumption has increased dramatically. For the mobile/handheld computing devices (such as PDA, cell phone and digital camera), which are generally battery powered and have limited energy budget, saving power consumption in ordinary operations could extend their operation time. Thinking how wonderful it will be if you only need re-charge your PDA or cell phone once a month! Even for large systems, such as  web servers and internet data server farms, where excessive amount of energy is consumed, power management could reduce the power consumption and thus the associated cooling cost. Therefore, Power/Energy Management is important and has quickly become one of the focal points in Computer Science/Engineering research.

Due to popularity of mobile devices, which incorporate more and more multimedia functionalities, in this study group, we focus on discussion of the underlying theories and power management schemes for multimedia applications/systems.

How it works: the group will meet once a week (for around one hour). Participants in this group are expected to involve in the discussion, read/present papers to the group. The group organizers will give talks for the introduction and background information at the beginning. Through the discussion, the organizers hope and expect to bring some aspirations among the group, stimulate research interests of the students, and find interesting projects to work together.

How to participate: we will meet every week on Friday around 11am in the CS conference room (SB 04.01.20). You can just stop by if your are interested in this topic.
