Projects:

¨         Proposed a novel interactive fusion method, which uses human-centered computing in fusing information from multiple sources. The interactive fusion process can enhance the performance of multi-modality and multi-classifier system. An interactive boosting process is implemented and tested as an example. It shows superior performance on face recognition, medical image classification and digital photo retrieval applications.

¨         Proposed a novel manifold learning framework to use semantic information for semi-supervised data clustering. The new framework automatically captures the intrinsic structure of multiple subspaces within same semantic class. It solves the challenging problems that the other state-of-the-art techniques, such as LDA, PCA and LDE, cannot handle.

¨         Developed a robust face identification system based on a new hybrid discriminant analysis (HDA). The key contribution of HDA is integrating and extracting both descriptive and discriminant features from data. Experiments on several benchmark face databases show that HDA is more robust to small sample set problem and data noise, such as illumination, expression and head pose change in face images, than the popular Eigenface and Fisherface method.

¨         Developed a color image retrieval system using Adaptive Discriminant Projection (ADP). ADP utilizes an adaptive clustering model to search for optimal projection for clustering relevant and irrelevant data. It has been proven very effective for learning on imbalanced and skewed data set in a projected space.

¨         Proposed a method to construct the best distance measurement for similarity estimation automatically. My method is based on study the relation of distance metrics, probability model and similarity estimation and outperforms the widely used Euclidean and Manhattan distance. It has been applied in applications such as motion tracking and stereo matching.

¨         Participated in bioinformatics project that applies hybrid discriminant analysis to predict DNA functionality with data collected from microarray.
