Professional societies are the lifeblood of research. They sponsor important conferences and usually the best specialized journals. Societies also provide a forum for addressing important issues for the profession. Over the years, I have joined various professional societies to support various collaborations. While it is somewhat expensive to belong to professional societies, I believe that they do important work and should be supported.
