Bio

Qi Tian received his Ph.D. degree in
Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Illinois in 2002. He received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1996, and B.E. degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, in 1992, respectively.

He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). During 2008-2009, he took a one-year faculty leave at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) as a Lead Researcher in the Media Computing Group (former Internet Media Group). In 2007, he was a Visiting Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), and a Visiting Scholar at MIAS Center, UIUC. In summer 2003, he was a Visiting Professor of NEC Laboratories America, Inc., Cupertino, CA, in the Video Media Understanding group. During 2000 and 2001, he was a summer Intern Researcher (2000, 2001) and visiting researcher with the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), Cambridge, MA. Before he joined UTSA, he was a research assistant of Professor Thomas S. Huang at the Image Formation and Processing (IFP) group of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and a teaching assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC from 1997 to 2002.

Dr. Tian's current research interests include Multimedia Information Retrieval, Computational Systems Biology, Biometrics, and Computer Vision. He has published about 100 refereed book chapters, journal and conference papers in these fields. He received a Best Student Paper Award (with Jie Yu) in IEEE ICASSP 2006, a Best Paper Candidate in Retrieval (with Yijuan Lu and Jingsheng Ma) in PCM 2007. He received several grants from Army Research Office (ARO), San Antonio Life Science Institute (SALSI), the Center of Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS), HP Laboratories, and UTSA Faculty Research Award (2004), all as Principal Investigator. He is a Leading Investigator at UTSA for a 2.4 million project jointly with MIAS Center, UIUC. He is currently in the Editorial Board of Journal of Multimedia, and the Guest Editor of Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU) for the Special Issue of Similarity Matching in Computer Vision and Multimedia, the Guest Editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia for the Special Issue of Integration of Context and Content for Multimedia Management, and the Guest Editor of EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, Special Issue for Applications in Healthcare Systems.

He is a Senior Member (2003) of IEEE , and a Member (2004) of ACM.
