CS 1023 Cultural Implications of the Information Society
Goals and Objectives, Spring 2000
Course Goals and Objectives:
- Learning about the information revolution--its
new opportunities and problems.
- Learning about the effects of this revolution on
society and culture.
- Being exposed to some of the technology behind the
revolution.
- Learning the basics of ethics and ethical decision making.
- Practicing essay writing, including not just a focus on ideas,
but on the mechanics of writing.
- Learning to use the World Wide Web.
- Working on a longer and larger project for the course.
Note: The following are not course objectives:
- Not an objective:
Learning to use software applications on computers,
such as spreadsheets or database products. These are part of the
objectives of the courses
- CS 1033 (Microcomputer Applications), or
- IS 3033 (Priciples of Information Systems for Management).
- Not an objective:
Learning to program in a computer language
such as Visual Basic, C, C++, or Java. This is the objective of the
courses
- CS 1063 (Introduction to Computer Programming: currently
works with the C language),
- CS 1073 (Introductory Computer Programming for Scientific Applications:
currently works with the Fortran language),
- CS 1713 (Introduction to Computer Science:
this semester works with the Java language; previously
used the C language), and
- CS 2073 (Computer Programming with Engineering Applications:
currently works with the C++ language).
- Not an objective:
Learning technical details about computer
hardware, software, and applications.
These are objectives of
- a Computer Science major (Division of Computer Science),
- an Electrical Engineering major (Division of Engineering), or
- an Information Systems major (Division of Accounting and
Information Systems).
