Research Synopsis for DoD H98230-11-R-1054 and DoD H98230-06-C-0443

These projects involve research on increasing the performance of linear algebra routines beyond the current capabilities of ATLAS, as well as improving the maintainability of ATLAS's auto-adapting framework. It is a long-running project, with many ideas for identified for eventual investigation. Currently, we are looking at the affect of using more accurate algorithms on performance, the automation of prefetching strategies, and the use of adaptive blocking to further extend performance. We plan on investigating new methods of exploiting the more recent CMP (Chip MultiProcessors) and their relavant cache heirarchies, the affect of problem shape on optimization, techniques for improving SIMD vectorization support, extension of optimization to higher-level operations, and into iterative compilation frameworks. More software-oriented areas include improving the automated install harness, adding support for full 64-bit kernels, improving timing methodolies and statistics, search heuristics, and basic architecture probing.

Collaborative Grants and Contracts

Dr. Qing Yi and I collaborate on empirical optimization research. As part of this work, we have obtained an REU supplement for my ATLAS NSF CNS-0551504 grant, which we use to fund research at the undergraduate level. I am also co-PI on an NSF CCF-0833203.
