Suggestions on Paper Presentation
To assist you in preparing your paper presentation, we would like to
make the following suggestions.
-
Read the paper at least 3 times, and try to thoroughly understand it. You
may need to read some other related papers or some textbooks to gain enough
background to understand the paper.
-
Prepare your presentation with Powerpoint or StarOffice slides. While you
are preparing the slides, keep these in mind.
-
Use Office 98/2000 or StarOffice 5.2
-
Use sufficiently large fonts. For example, use at least 32 pt for title,
and 28 pt for text.
-
Keep each slide simple, and to the point.
-
Use graphs and animation to help getting ideas across. But avoid making
it too fancy.
-
Save your presentation on a number of spare diskettes
-
Do not make too many slides. Roughly, you perhaps would spend about 2 minutes
per slide on average.
-
Do not organize your presentation following the way the authors organized
the paper. You would not have enough time to complete. Instead, you should
come up with your own way of explaining the content of the paper. If necessary,
develop your own examples.
-
Try to provide the following information
-
A clear, precise description of the problem the paper is trying to solve.
-
The motivations behind the paper?
-
Basic idea/theory that the paper was based on?
-
The method/algorithm/framework used in the paper to solve the problem.
(Examples should be used instead of page after page of algorithms copied
from the paper)
-
You evaluation and comments about the paper.
-
It is very important to have an appropriate level of details
-
Practice to manage the time, so that you can finish in about 20 minutes
and prepared to answer a few questions from the audience.
