- Jun 15, 2011, Dr. Ruan joins the editorial board of ISRN Bioinformatics, a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in all areas of bioinformatics.
- Jun 15, 2011, The editorial in the January issue of PLoS Computational Biology reviewed the major development of the journal in the past years. Among the highlights of this editorial is a list of research articles published since 2005 through October 2010 that have accrued over 10,000 downloads (Table 1). our paper - X. Zhou, J. Ruan, G. Wang and W. Zhang, Characterization and identification of microRNA core promoters in four model species , PLoS Computational Biology , 3 (3):e37, 2007 - is one of these highly downloaded papers.

- April 6, 2010, PhD student Chengwei Lei's paper "Finding gapped motifs by a novel evolutionary algorithm" is nominated for the best paper award at the 8th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics. Congratulations, Chengwei!
- Feb 25, 2010, Dr. Ruan and collaborators (Drs. Rong Li, Yanfen Hu, and Howard Wang from UTHSC-SA and Drs. Xiaodu Wang and Keying Ye from UTSA) are awarded a $225,000 (UTSA portion: $108,000) grant by the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute for a project entitled "Molecular Changes in Aging Breast Stroma".

- November 1, 2009, Dr. Ruan organized the First International Workshop on Graph Techniques for Biomedical Networks, in Washington DC.
- September 25, 2009, Dr. Ruan recieved a $124,117 NIH Recovery Act fund to supplement his existing NIH award. This fund will be used for hiring graduate research assistant. Interested students please contact him via email.
- July 25, 2009, Dr. Ruan and Drs. Sponsel and Sunter recieved a $150,000 NSF grant entitled "A combined biochemical, molecular and computational approach to understanding the regulation of gibberellin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis".
- April 06, 2009, Chengwei Lei, PhD student in Ruan's lab recieved a distinguished award in the UTSA Graduate Student Project Presentation Competition, for his research titled "A Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm for Finding DNA Sequence Motifs". Congratulations, Chengwei!
- December 12, 2008, Dr. Ruan recieved an NIH grant, with a total award amount of $433,500 for 4 years, to analyze the community structures of protein-protein interaction networks and gene co-expression networks. CS news
- November 4, 2008, A paper on "Variations in the transcriptome of Alzheimer's disease reveal molecular networks involved in cardiovascular diseases" in Genome Biology by M. Ray, J. Ruan and W. Zhang, is ranked the second most accessed paper in the last 30 days.
